Emergency and homeless shelters that take care offamilies with children are eligible for DSS reimbursements for up to three meals a day served to the children. Qualifying is easy: all public or private nonprofit institutions that provide support to at-risk children age 12 and under and their families are eligible. This includes family shelters, battered women's shelters, and other facilities whose primary purpose is to provide temporary shelter to homeless families with children.
Meals must meet nutrition guidelines, but recordkeeping is not complicated. We recognize that volunteers operate many shelters. Even meals prepared from donated foods, or meals donated by restaurants, can be eligible if they meet certain meal pattern requirements
Our goal is to see that children temporarily residing in shelters receive adequate nutrition, so this program is flexible to make it easy for shelters to participate. Please call us at (803) 898-7576 if you are interested in receiving payments for the food your shelter provides to these children.
