Commodity Supplemental Food Program
(CSFP)

The
South Carolina Commodity Supplemental Food Program (CSFP) works to improve
the health of participants by supplementing their diets with nutritious
U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) commodity foods. The program is
administered by the South Carolina Department of Social Services (SCDSS)
and funded by the USDA.
The population served by CSFP is similar to that served by USDA's
Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children
(WIC), but CSFP also serves older persons (age 60 and above), and provides
food packages rather than the checks that WIC participants receive.
Eligible women, infants and children cannot participate in both WIC and
CSFP at the same time.
The South Carolina Department of Social Services (SCDSS) manages the
food ordering process. The three Second Harvest Food Banks in South Carolina
receive, warehouse, and package the commodities. They partner with local
organizations to determine the eligibility of applicants, distribute the
food packages, and provide nutrition education.
